Four New Zealand Bird Artists to Exhibit in Akaroa

Akaroa, Banks Peninsula – 24 February, 2020

Four New Zealand native bird artists are migrating south for the “Birds Eye View” exhibition at the Orion Powerhouse Gallery in Akaroa. The dates for this show are 28 March to 19 April 2020, with a members only opening night (by invitation only) from 5pm to 6.30pm on Friday, 27 March 2020.

From pastels and scratchboards by Karen Rankin Neal, to oils by Carol Theologo, drippy watercolours and ink by Rachel Walker, and photoart and mixed media by Judi Lapsley Miller, each artist brings a unique style and perspective to our native birds. Visitors will delight in seeing their favourites like the beloved tui and kereru, as well as discovering some rarer species such as the hihi and the incredibly rare Chatham Islands parea.

Gallery president Bryan Tichborne says “ It’s not often we get the privilege of showing work like this!  A treasure trove of avian art.”.

The artists are all popular exhibitors in the Wellington and Nelson-Marlborough regions. They recently participated in a well-received group exhibition in the New Zealand Parliament Gallery, celebrating community conservation projects. Their art, much of which is inspired by the birds they see every day in biophilic Wellington, will hopefully give Peninsula and wider Canterbury residents a taste of what to expect as local restoration and predator-free projects make increasing strides to bring back the birds.

The historic Akaroa Powerhouse Gallery is at 1 Rue Pompallier, Akaroa. It is open daily from 10am to 4pm. This is the last show at the gallery for the summer season. All sales/gallery profits go back into the community. The gallery is run entirely by volunteers.
