My art is inspired by advocacy for the wildlife and land of Aotearoa-New Zealand. My images explore the beauty of our birds, the tenacity of life in the face of environmental destruction, and possible post-human worlds. Many of my images are inspired from my experiences volunteering in wildlife conservation projects, especially with my beloved kaka at Zealandia EcoSanctuary.

I’m a latecomer to the art world, having taken a tangent as a scientist for a few decades. In 2016-7, I did a professional photo-artistry course just for fun. From that experience and training, I took a leap of faith and started exhibiting and selling my art. I have since done four solo exhibitions, multiple group exhibitions, and my fine-art prints are available in a number of New Zealand galleries and are in private collections around the world.

Photography is just the first step in my creative process – I digitally blend and mask layers of photographs, graphics, scanned ephemera and textures, lighting and colour adjustments, and digital brushstrokes to form an image that is more painting than photograph. The digital image is then realized in physical form as a Giclee print, and I may then morph the print into a mixed-media encaustic.

Horrified by the amount of waste in the printing and framing process, I created the “TinyArt” eco-project, where offcuts are upcycled into tiny pieces of collectable framed art using the same archival materials used for my larger works.

For all my artworks featuring endangered birds, a percentage of my proceeds goes back to conservation organizations to help ensure their vital work can continue. Thus, the art buyer is also participating in wildlife conservation. In this exhibition, I am supporting Zealandia EcoSanctuary, Forest & Bird, and the Hihi Recovery Group.
